Michael Francis Ryan
Born in Boston, Massachusetts
Lives and works in the Catskills of New York, Brooklyn NY and Paris.
I create from the tension between industry and nature, where raw materials, silence, and form become a meditation on consciousness itself. Through sculpture, mixed media, photography, and works on paper, I pursue a minimalist language that strips away distraction to reveal something quieter, deeper, and spiritually resonant. Drawn to simplicity and the poetry of familiar materials, my practice is less about representation and more about awakening a moment of contemplation—an encounter with presence, memory, and the possibility of a higher awareness.
Materiality lies at the center of my process. Industrial metals, weathered surfaces, reclaimed elements, wood, paper, and found objects are not merely mediums but carriers of history, labor, and transformation. I am interested in how materials hold memory and how their physical presence can evoke an emotional or spiritual response. Through reduction, juxtaposition, and careful attention to form, I seek to reveal the quiet essence embedded within ordinary matter.
My relationship to making is rooted in a lineage of artisans. My father, a photographer, taught me to see, to recognize the power of light, composition, and the poetry hidden within everyday moments. My grandfather, a cabinet maker, instilled an appreciation for craftsmanship, patience, and the intimate knowledge that emerges through working with one's hands. Their influence continues to shape my practice, informing both my respect for materials and my belief that the act of making can be a form of contemplation.
Whether working with industrial remnants or natural elements, I seek a balance between precision and imperfection, structure and intuition. The resulting works invite viewers into a space of stillness, where material, memory, and consciousness converge.
Growing up in the Boston area, I received a Masters degree in Visual Design from the University of Massachusetts. Recognized by the “Who’s Who” of Boston emerging artists early in my career, it lead to major exhibitions of group and solo shows in the Chelsea district of New York including the former Heidi Cho Gallery, Pleiades Gallery, and New Century Gallery. More recent highlights include a select show at the Boca Museum of Art, Boca Raton Florida; gallery and international art fair showings in Miami, Houston, Amsterdam, London, Florence, Milan, Venice, Innsbruck, and Basel. Included in the collections of the Jewish Historical Society of Boston, Louis of Boston, Xerox Corp., international jazz musician Chuck Mangione, and several private collectors.
